Gel Manicures – Is it worth the risk?

Gel Manicures – Is it worth the risk?

Now you all know how much I love nail polish. In other posts, I’ve even spoken about my nail polish rack in our office closet (yes, like the ones at the nail salons).  It’s just a fun way to express yourself and add a little fun and color to your outfits – like an accessory.  I’m also big on bringing my own polish with me when I get my manicures and pedicures, because I’m pretty fanatic to using three and five free brands.  I’m absolutely obsessed with LVX colors – more about that in another post.

Many of you have asked my opinion of gel manicures, I will admit – I am not a fan.I realize that they don’t chip, last twice as long, etc… but everything has a price.  Think about it- is your nail bed breathing?  You need to soak your hand in acetone to remove them, and to make matters worse you need to let them cure under a UV light.  Why should the UV light be of concern you ask?  Studies are now linking this to skin cancer.  Take a look at this recent article in the New York Post, by Amy Stretten, Amber Sutherland and Cynthia R. Fagen:

Doc warns that popular gel manicure is a ‘cancer risk’

My point is this, there are healthier alternative to the gel manicure – so why take the risk?  However, for some – and I know a lot of those who are part of this demographic – the risk is worth the reward.  My position is not to judge, just provide some additional information to make an informed choice.

…..So now that I’m all jazzed up about nails…I’m going to go give my digits a pop of color.
